Why it matters

Raghunath Ji was the family deity of the Dogra rulers of Jammu and Kashmir. Rama is worshipped here as the central deity, and the shrines around him honour Vishnu's avatars, Surya and many other gods.

The Trust says the temple holds images of nearly the whole Hindu pantheon. A gallery displays lingams and saligrams, and a library holds rare Sanskrit manuscripts.

Trustee M K Ajatshatru Singh told the Tribune (January 2024) that 33,000 devis and devtas are believed to reside at the temple, and that 32 shrines stand outside the complex.

Legends

A temple for Rama of the Dogra kings

Maharaja Gulab Singh, the founder of the Jammu and Kashmir state, began the temple in the 1830s for his family deity Rama. His son Ranbir Singh completed it. The Trust's page gives the dates 1835 to 1860.

2002: Attacks

News reports say the temple was attacked twice by terrorists in 2002. Casualty figures differ between sources, so we do not quote a number.

January 2024: Ayodhya celebrations

The Dharmarth Trust held a three-day programme of Ramayana recitation, bhajans and Sunderkand Path to mark the Ayodhya consecration (Tribune).

Architecture

The complex has seven shrines, each with its own shikhara (tower). The Trust says the carvings and arches show Mughal influence, and gold sheets cover the interior walls on three sides.

At the entrance are a portrait of Maharaja Ranbir Singh and an image of Hanuman. The central shrine holds Lord Raghunath. Other shrines are for forms of Vishnu and for Surya.
