Jwala Ji (Jwalamukhi) Temple

Jawalamukhi, Kangra district · Goddess Jwala (the Mother Goddess as eternal flames); no idol

A Shakti Peetha with no idol: the goddess is worshipped as nine natural flames burning from the rock, served with five aartis a day.

Jwala Ji (Jawalamukhi) is one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where Sati's tongue is believed to have fallen. There is no idol: the goddess is worshipped as small blue-tinged flames (jyotis) that burn continuously from fissures in the rock of the sanctum, fed by natural gas. Nine flames are named after forms of the Goddess, the central one being Mahakali. The temple stands on the Kalidhar ridge of the Shivalik hills in Kangra district, about 30 km from Kangra town, and is busiest during the Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri fairs.
