Krishna temples of India
From Mathura's prison cell to Dwarka's kingdom
A curated route through the great Krishna temples – the places of his birth, childhood, kingship, and the regional forms in which he is worshipped across India.
Krishna, the eighth avatar of Vishnu, is worshipped in many forms: the infant at Udupi and Guruvayur, the cowherd of Braj at Vrindavan, the king at Dwarka, Jagannath at Puri, Shrinathji at Nathdwara and Vithoba at Pandharpur. Each temple preserves a different part of his story.
This is not a single traditional yatra but a way to see how one deity is loved in many regional traditions – Pushti Marg in Nathdwara, the Madhva tradition in Udupi, the Varkari movement in Pandharpur.
