Shri Jagannath Temple, Puri

Grand Road (Bada Danda), Puri, Odisha · Lord Jagannath (a form of Vishnu/Krishna), with his elder brother Balabhadra, sister Subhadra and the Sudarshana Chakra; Sridevi, Bhudevi and Madhava are also worshipped on the jewelled platform

The 12th-century home of Lord Jagannath, one of the four Char Dham, famous for its wooden deities, its vast kitchen and the Rath Yatra chariot festival.

The Jagannath temple in Puri is one of the holiest Vaishnava shrines in India and the eastern seat of the Char Dham pilgrimage that Adi Shankaracharya is credited with organising (Badrinath, Dwarka, Puri and Rameswaram). The main tower, about 65 m high, was built by the Eastern Ganga kings in the 12th century in the Kalinga style. Unlike almost every other Hindu temple, the main deities here are carved from wood and are replaced in a secret ceremony called Nabakalebara. Every summer they leave the temple on three giant chariots during the Rath Yatra, watched by lakhs of people. Darshan is free; only Hindus may enter.
