The six battle-camps (abodes) of Lord Murugan
The six most sacred shrines of Lord Murugan (Subramanya / Kartikeya), all in Tamil Nadu, described in the Sangam-era poem Thirumurugatrupadai by Nakkeerar.
Each abode marks an episode in Murugan's life – his wedding to Deivanai, his victory over Surapadman, renunciation at Palani, teaching the meaning of Om to Shiva, his marriage to Valli, and his play with the poet Avvaiyar.
Devotees traditionally visit all six; Thaipusam, Skanda Sashti, Panguni Uthiram and Vaikasi Visakam are the big festival days.
