Arulmigu Swaminatha Swamy Temple, Swamimalai

Swamimalai, near Kumbakonam, Thanjavur district · Lord Swaminatha Swamy (Murugan as the teacher of his father Shiva); Lord Sundareswarar and Goddess Meenakshi at the foot

The fourth abode: on a man-made hill of 60 steps, the child Murugan explained the meaning of Om to Shiva himself.

Swamimalai, on a tributary of the Kaveri near Kumbakonam, is the fourth of Murugan's six abodes. Here the boy Murugan is said to have explained the meaning of the Pranava mantra 'Om' to his father Shiva, earning the name Swaminatha – 'the teacher of the Lord'. Because the Thanjavur delta has no natural hills, the shrine stands on an artificial hillock (a 'katumalai') about 18 m (60 ft) high, climbed by 60 steps named after the 60 years of the Tamil calendar. Shiva and Meenakshi are worshipped at the foot, and Murugan as the guru at the top.
