Arulmigu Subramaniyaswamy Temple, Thiruparankundram

Thiruparankundram, Madurai district (about 8 km south-west of Madurai city) · Lord Subramaniya Swamy (Murugan) in his wedding form with Goddess Deivanai (Theivanai); also Lord Sathyagireeswarar (Shiva) and Pavalakanivai Perumal (Vishnu)

The first abode: a rock-cut cave temple where Murugan married Deivanai, carved into a granite hill on the edge of Madurai.

Thiruparankundram is the first of Murugan's six abodes (Arupadai Veedu) and the place where, after his victory over the demon Surapadman, he married Deivanai, daughter of Indra. The main shrine is cut directly into the north face of a granite hill about 320 m (1,050 ft) high, so the sanctum is a cave: Murugan, Durga, Vinayaka, Shiva and Vishnu are all carved in the living rock. Because the deity is part of the rock, abhishekam (ritual bathing) is performed only on Murugan's golden Vel (spear), not on the image itself. It is the abode closest to Madurai and is a hugely popular place for weddings.
