Maa Vindhyavasini Temple
Vindhyachal, Mirzapur district (on the Ganga, between Varanasi and Prayagraj) · Goddess Vindhyavasini, a form of Durga (Yogmaya)
The goddess of the Vindhya hills on the bank of the Ganga, now with a new corridor, and the Trikon yatra to three shrines.
Vindhyachal is a pilgrim town about 8 km from Mirzapur, 65 km from Varanasi and 85 km from Prayagraj. Its temple of Vindhyavasini is regarded as one of the most revered Shakti Peeths (Siddhapeeths) and draws large crowds every day, with the biggest fairs in Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri. Pilgrims customarily complete the Trikon (triangle) yatra by also visiting Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja temples on the hills nearby. The temple surroundings have been rebuilt as the Vindhya Corridor, modelled on the Kashi Vishwanath Corridor in Varanasi.

How to book darshan
Vindhyavasini is a walk-in temple. No official online booking site for poojas was found. Local tirth purohits (hereditary priests) perform rituals in person; agree the dakshina before you start.
- Reach Vindhyachal station or the town by road; vehicles stop some distance from the temple on busy days.
- Buy a simple offering (chunri, coconut, flowers, sweets) from the shops on the approach lane; ask the price first.
- Join the queue and follow the barricades into the sanctum.
- If you want a pooja, ask your purohit or the temple office what is the normal dakshina before you start.
Booking safely
- No official online booking site was confirmed. Do not pay any website or caller for 'VIP darshan' or 'special puja'. Fix prices for priests, guides, autos and shops before you start.
Ask your hotel or a known local guide for the normal rates.

Why it matters
Vindhyavasini is the goddess who 'lives in the Vindhyas'. In the Markandeya Purana, as noted on Wikipedia, she is the form of Durga who killed the buffalo demon Mahishasura and then chose to stay at Vindhyachal. The Devi Mahatmya (Durga Saptashati) also speaks of her.
A popular tradition identifies her with the girl born to Yashoda on the night Krishna was born, whom Kansa tried to dash against a stone and who escaped into the Vindhya hills.
Wikipedia notes that Vindhyachal has specific temples of Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati close together: the main temple, Kali Khoh (Maha Kali) and Ashtabhuja (Maha Saraswati). This is why the three-temple Trikon parikrama is treated as a single pilgrimage.
The Navratri fairs in Chaitra and Ashwin draw very large crowds, and the city is decorated with lamps and flowers (Wikipedia).
Legends
Mahishasura and the goddess who stayed
According to the Markandeya Purana, the goddess took birth to destroy Mahishasura. After the battle she chose the Vindhya range as her home, and is worshipped here as Vindhyavasini.
The girl Kansa could not kill
The tradition recorded on Wikipedia says the goddess was born from Yashoda's womb on the same night as Krishna. When Kansa tried to smash her against a rock she slipped out of his hands and declared that his destroyer was already born; she then settled in the Vindhya hills.
History
Ancient: A Devi site of the Vindhyas
Vindhyachal has been a Shakti pilgrimage for many centuries. Exact dates for the present building are not given in the sources read for this guide.
1 August 2021: Vindhya Corridor foundation
The Union Home Minister and the Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister laid the foundation stone of the corridor. News reports at the time gave its cost as ₹224 crore to ₹300 crore (the sources differ); it was planned with a 50-foot-wide parikrama path, pink sandstone from Ahraura and facilities for pilgrims.
2025: Corridor in use
In March 2025 the Chief Minister said temple revenue had grown about fivefold in a year since the corridor opened. In July 2026 he visited the temple and inspected the corridor, including self-help-group stalls in the parikrama courtyard.
Architecture
The old temple sits in a dense market lane close to the Ganga. The corridor project widened the approach and created a new parikrama path and courtyards around it. A reported feature is the use of pink stone from Ahraura, worked by artisans from Jaipur.
Inside, devotees enter the sanctum through gates including the Ganesh gate (Amar Ujala, July 2026) and have a short, crowded darshan of the goddess.
What to see
- Vindhyavasini sanctum: The main shrine. Darshan is short because of the numbers; on Navratri days the queue can be many hours.
- Vindhya Corridor and parikrama path: A new wide walkway and courtyards around the temple, replacing the older narrow lane.
- Kali Khoh: A cave shrine to Maha Kali on the hills, part of the Trikon yatra (Wikipedia).
- Ashtabhuja temple: An eight-armed Devi shrine on a hill, associated with Saraswati; also part of the Trikon yatra (Wikipedia).
- Sita Kund: A pond near the Ashtabhuja hill, a common stop for pilgrims.
How to cover the temple
The usual route is darshan at the Vindhyavasini temple, then the Trikon yatra to Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja, and back to the main temple. The district sets up queues and barricades in Navratri.
- Vindhyachal: Vindhyachal station is about 1 km from the temple. In Navratri vehicles stop away from the temple and you walk the last stretch.
- Buy flowers, coconut, chunri: From the shops on the approach lane. Ask the price first.
- Vindhyavasini sanctum: Queue through the corridor and enter through the gates (the Ganesh gate was used by the Chief Minister in July 2026).
- Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja: Go to the cave shrine of Kali and the hill shrine of Ashtabhuja, which Wikipedia associates with Maha Kali and Maha Saraswati. Sita Kund is a common stop.
- Back to the main temple: Pilgrims usually begin and end at the Vindhyavasini temple (hindutone).
Customs and traditions
Trikon parikrama
A circuit of the three Devi temples: Vindhyavasini, Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja.
Vindhyachal is described as having temples of Lakshmi, Kali and Saraswati close together.
By auto or taxi with walking at the hill shrines. Agree on a plan with a local guide.
Navratri visit
Large fairs in Chaitra and Ashwin.
The goddess is especially worshipped in the nine nights.
Expect long queues; sharad Navratri 2026 ran 11–19 October.
For elders and differently-abled visitors
Access: Moderate. The main temple is flat and the Vindhya Corridor has widened the approach, but Navratri queues run many hours and vehicles stop far from the temple. The Trikon yatra includes steps at the hill shrines.
- Ashtabhuja and Kali Khoh are on hills and need climbing.
- Local autos and guides do the Trikon yatra; agree the fare first. Avoid Navratri if elders are travelling.
Waiting time
No queue figures were published for ordinary days.
Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri (Sharadiya Navratri 2026 ran 11–19 October); Tuesdays and full-moon days are also busy.
Best time to visit
October to March is comfortable. For smaller crowds, avoid the nine days of Chaitra and Ashwin Navratri and Tuesdays. For atmosphere, go during Navratri but plan for very long queues.
Festivals
Chaitra Navratri (March–April)
A major fair.
Sharad (Ashwin) Navratri (October (2026: 11–19 October))
The largest fair of the year; Ashtami and Navami fell on 19 October 2026 (hindutone).
Kajali festival (Jyeshtha (June))
Folk-song competitions (Wikipedia).
How to reach Maa Vindhyavasini Temple
- By air: Lal Bahadur Shastri Airport, Varanasi, about 72 km (Wikipedia).
- By rail: Vindhyachal station, about 1 km from the temple. Mirzapur station is about 8–9 km.
- By road: On the national highway between Varanasi (about 65 km) and Prayagraj (about 85 km). Buses and taxis run from both cities.
Road safety
An easy drive on the national highway between Varanasi (about 65 km) and Prayagraj (about 85 km). The difficulty is the crowds in Navratri, when vehicles are stopped some way from the temple and you walk the last stretch.
Town lanes to the temple. The Vindhya Corridor has widened the approach, but traffic and parking near the temple are usually restricted in Navratri (hindutone). Kali Khoh and Ashtabhuja are on hills with steps.
Where to stay
Many pilgrims make a day trip from Varanasi or Prayagraj, or stay at dharamshalas and hotels in Vindhyachal and Mirzapur. Book early during Navratri.
- Dharamshalas and hotels in Vindhyachal / Mirzapur – Wide range; check on arrival or online. Book directly with the property.
