Shri Kalika Mata (Mahakali) Temple, Pavagadh
Pavagadh Hill, near Champaner, Panchmahal district · Goddess Kalika (Mahakali), worshipped as one of the 51 Shakti Peeths; the sanctum image is a red-painted face (mukhwato)
A hill-top Shakti temple, reached by a ropeway and a long stair, with a new spire raised after about 500 years.
Kalika Mata Temple, also called the Mahakali temple, stands on the top of Pavagadh hill, about 800 m above sea level, in Panchmahal district, Gujarat. It is about 45 km from Vadodara. The hill and the old city of Champaner at its foot form the Champaner-Pavagadh Archaeological Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Pilgrims reach the temple on foot by a long forest path and steps, or by a ropeway from Machi, followed by a climb of roughly 250 m and a few hundred steps. The temple was redeveloped, and in June 2022 the Prime Minister inaugurated it and a new spire was crowned with a flag.

Why it matters
The Gujarat Tourism page says the temple of Mother Kali on the hill-top is the oldest in the area, dating from the 10th–11th centuries. Wikipedia says it is believed to be one of the 51 Shakti Peeths.
According to folklore recorded in a PTI report, the sage Vishwamitra installed the image of Goddess Kalika here.
Gujarat Tourism says the inner sanctum holds only the head of the goddess, painted red, with full images of Mahakali and yantras of Bahuchara also in the temple.
Pilgrims climb the hill all year, with the biggest crowds in Navaratri. The hill is also holy for Jains (see Nearby).
Legends
Vishwamitra and Kalika
A PTI report (June 2022) says folklore holds that the sage Vishwamitra installed the image of Goddess Kalika on the hill. The temple itself is dated to the 11th century.
Sadan Shah and the lost spire
The same report says that after Sultan Mahmud Begada captured Champaner in the 15th century, the temple's original spire was destroyed, and a shrine of the Muslim saint Sadan Shah Pir was built on top of the temple. In 2022 the temple trust reached an agreement with the dargah's caretakers, the dargah was moved to a nearby site, and a new spire was built.

News reports in April 2025 said a ₹115 crore extension was planned from Dudhiya Talav to near the temple, to cut the climb. We could not confirm that it is complete.
Architecture
Gujarat Tourism describes the complex as having large fortifications and an open chowk with two sacrifice altars, lit on special occasions.
The new spire (shikhara) was built in the 2022 redevelopment and carries a red flag. The redevelopment also widened the steps from the foot of the hill and added a new three-level complex.
Machi Haveli, on a plateau at about 490 m, is a rest house for pilgrims. The ropeway starts from Machi.

Customs and traditions
Climbing on foot
Many devotees walk up from the foot of the hill, about 5 km, instead of using the ropeway.
A vow or an act of devotion.
Only fit adults, early in cool weather.
Offering at the Shakti Peeth
Devotees offer coconut, flowers and cloth to the goddess.
Pavagadh is counted among the 51 Shakti Peeths (Wikipedia).
Buy from stalls on the way; follow the staff's instructions at the sanctum.
The raising of the flag on the new spire
A flag now flies on the new spire; in June 2022 the Prime Minister raised it.
A PTI report says the spire had been missing for about 500 years and no flag flew without it.
Look up from the courtyard.
For elders and differently-abled visitors
Access: Very hard. Even with the ropeway, the temple needs a climb of roughly 250 m (a news report says about 449 steps). A news report in April 2025 said the state was planning a ropeway extension because elderly and differently-abled devotees find the climb difficult. We could not confirm that it is built.
- No separate senior-citizen queue was found.
- No wheelchair access to the temple was found. The ropeway ends below the temple and steps remain.
- The walk from Machi takes over an hour on steep steps (Wikipedia). With the ropeway, about 250 m of steps still remain.
- The ropeway shortens the climb. Rest on the way and go in cool weather.
Waiting time
Not published. Allow about 4–7 hours for the whole trip.
Navaratri and weekends are busiest (travel guides).
Best time to visit
October to February is the best weather. The monsoon (June–September) is green but slippery, and the ropeway can be closed in bad weather (it was shut on 6 September 2025 for weather, per Scroll). Summer (March–June) is very hot on the climb. Navaratri and weekends are the busiest.
Festivals
Navaratri (Sharad and Chaitra) (September–October and March–April)
The busiest time. Travel guides say the temple opens earlier and closes later. Expect long queues and plan extra time.
Purnima and other full-moon days (Monthly)
Popular pilgrimage days.
How to reach Shri Kalika Mata (Mahakali) Temple, Pavagadh
- By air: Vadodara airport, about 45–50 km.
- By rail: Vadodara Junction on the main Delhi–Mumbai line (Gujarat Tourism).
- By road: Pavagadh is about 45 km from Vadodara, by bus or car (Gujarat Tourism). Vehicles and buses go up to Machi Haveli (about 490 m); from there take the ropeway or climb.
Road safety
The road to Machi is easy, but the temple is on a hill-top reached by a ropeway followed by steps, or by a long footpath. The main risks are the steep climb, heat, wet stairs in the monsoon, and the ropeway being closed for weather or maintenance.
Vehicles and buses go up to Machi Haveli, a plateau at about 490 m. From there the ropeway (about 6 minutes) takes you toward the top, and then about 250 m of climbing, which a news report counts as about 449 steps, leads to the temple (Wikipedia; DeshGujarat). The footpath from the foot of the hill is about 5 km (Gujarat Tourism).
Where to stay
Machi Haveli is a rest house for pilgrims (Gujarat Tourism). Vadodara has the nearest range of hotels.

Tips
