Ramappa (Rudreswara) Temple, Palampet
Palampet, Venkatapur mandal, Mulugu district · Lord Shiva as Ramalingeswara (originally consecrated as Rudreswara)
UNESCO World Heritage Kakatiya masterpiece of 1213 CE, with floating bricks, a 'sandbox' foundation and some of India's finest dance sculpture.
Ramappa, officially the Rudreswara temple, was built from 1213 CE by Recherla Rudra, a general of the Kakatiya king Ganapati Deva. It is the only major Indian temple popularly known by the name of its sculptor-architect, Ramappa. It stands on a star-shaped platform beside the Kakatiya-built Ramappa Lake. Its black dolerite bracket figures of dancers and musicians, its lightweight bricks that float on water, and its sand-filled foundation make it one of the high points of medieval Deccan art. UNESCO inscribed it as a World Heritage Site on 25 July 2021. It is a living temple: the Shiva linga is still worshipped.

Modest clothing covering shoulders and knees. Remove footwear before climbing the temple platform; the stone gets hot by midday, so socks help.
Best time to visit
October to February, ideally early morning (6–9 AM) or late afternoon (3:30–5:30 PM), when the low sun brings out the relief on the dolerite figures and it is cooler. Avoid summer middays. The monsoon (July–September) makes the lake and paddy fields beautiful but the roads can be poor.
