Shri Mahakaleshwar Jyotirlinga Temple

Ujjain, Madhya Pradesh (beside Rudra Sagar, near the Shipra river) · Lord Shiva as Mahakala, 'Lord of Time and Death' – the only south-facing (Dakshinamukhi) Jyotirlinga

The south-facing Jyotirlinga of Ujjain, famous for the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti in which Shiva is adorned with sacred ash.

Mahakaleshwar in Ujjain – ancient Avantika, one of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) – is one of the most visited Jyotirlingas. Shiva is worshipped here as Mahakal, the lord who rules time and death, and as the king of Ujjain. The linga is swayambhu (self-manifested) and faces south, the direction of Yama, god of death, which is unique among the twelve. The temple is world-famous for the Bhasma Aarti at 4 AM, for which passes are booked online. Since 2022 the temple sits inside the Mahakal Lok corridor. General darshan is free; Sheeghra (quick) Darshan, aarti passes and abhishek are booked on the temple committee's website.
