The temple came under the Ujjain municipal corporation after Independence and is now run by a committee led by the district Collector under the 1982 Adhiniyam. The committee manages darshan queues, the pre-dawn Bhasma Aarti bookings, prasad and pilgrim facilities. The Supreme Court has also issued directions to it on protecting the Jyotirlinga from erosion.
How it is run
The Collector of Ujjain district is ex officio President of the committee, and an officer of Additional Collector rank serves as Administrator; the Act falls under the MP Religious Trusts and Endowments Department.
Tips for pilgrims
- Book the Bhasma Aarti (about 4–6 am) only on the official portal; there are no authorised agents.
- Carry government photo ID that matches your booking.
- Maha Shivratri brings very large crowds.
