Sri Gnana Saraswati Temple
Basara (Basar), Nirmal district, on the Godavari near the Maharashtra border · Goddess Gnana Saraswati, with Maha Lakshmi and Maha Kali
The goddess of learning on the Godavari – where children write their first letters before Saraswati, said to be shaped by Vyasa from river sand.
Basara, on the north bank of the Godavari near the Maharashtra border, is the best-known Saraswati temple in South India. The Devasthanam describes Basara and Saraswati's temple in Kashmir as the two most famous Saraswati shrines in India. The goddess is seated with a veena, her face smeared with turmeric; Maha Lakshmi is beside her and Maha Kali nearby, so Basara is the abode of the three goddesses. Families come in large numbers for Aksharabhyasam, a child's first lesson in writing.
