Baba Baidyanath Dham
Deoghar, Deoghar district, Jharkhand · Lord Shiva as Baidyanath / Vaidyanath, 'Lord of Physicians' (Kamna Linga, the wish-fulfilling linga); with Goddess Jaya Durga (Shakti Peetha)
The Jyotirlinga that Ravana tried to carry to Lanka, where a Jyotirlinga and a Shakti Peetha stand side by side – and the goal of the month-long Shravani Mela kanwar walk.
Baidyanath Dham in Deoghar is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and, by tradition, one of the 51 Shakti Peethas, where the heart of Sati fell (Jaya Durga). The east-facing main temple is a plain stone structure with a pyramidal tower about 72 feet high, crowned with three gold vessels and a rare five-pronged Panchashula. Around it are 21 smaller temples. Every Shravan (July–August) millions of saffron-clad kanwariyas walk about 105–108 km barefoot from Sultanganj on the Ganga to pour holy water on the linga.
