Pancharama Kshetras

Five Shiva temples of Andhra, from one shattered linga

Five ancient Shiva temples in coastal Andhra Pradesh. Legend says that when Kumaraswamy (Subramanya) destroyed the demon Tarakasura, the Atma Linga he wore shattered into five pieces, which fell at these five places.

Visiting all five in a single day during Karthika Masam (Oct–Nov) is believed to be especially meritorious, and APSRTC/APTDC run dedicated Pancharama bus packages in that month.

Draksharama and Kumararama (Samalkot) were built by the Eastern Chalukya king Chalukya Bhima I and are near-identical twins in plan, with two-storey lingas.

The temples

  1. Sri Amaralingeswara Swamy Temple (Amararama)
  2. Sri Someswara Janardhana Swamy Temple (Somarama)
  3. Sri Ksheera Ramalingeswara Swamy Temple (Ksheerarama)
  4. Sri Bhimeswara Swamy Temple (Draksharama)
  5. Sri Chalukya Kumararama Bhimeswara Swamy Temple (Kumararama)
