108 Divya Desams – highlights

Vishnu temples sung by the Alvar saints

The 108 Divya Desams are the Vishnu temples praised in the Nalayira Divya Prabandham, the 4,000 Tamil hymns of the twelve Alvar poet-saints (6th–9th centuries). 106 are on earth – mostly in Tamil Nadu, with others in Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, north India and Nepal – and two are celestial.

For Sri Vaishnavas, a temple becomes a Divya Desam because an Alvar sang of it. Visiting all 106 earthly Divya Desams is a lifelong aspiration; Srirangam is counted first and is called 'the temple' (Koil).

This list shows the Divya Desams that have in-depth guides here, plus Muktinath in Nepal. Ayodhya, Mathura, Dwarka, Badrinath and Ahobilam are among the northern and Deccan Divya Desams.
