Vaikom Mahadeva Temple

Vaikom, Kottayam district, on the shore of Vembanad Lake · Lord Shiva (Vaikkathappan), seen as Dakshinamurthy at dawn, Kirathamurthy at noon and Sambasiva/Shakti Panchakshari in the evening

The 'Annadana Prabhu' of Vembanad, home of Vaikathashtami and the 1924–25 Vaikom Satyagraha.

Vaikom Mahadeva Temple, near the eastern shore of Vembanad Lake, is one of the oldest and most revered Shiva temples in Kerala. Its sanctum is the only oval (elliptical) one in Kerala. Shiva here is called Vaikkathappan and Annadana Prabhu, the lord of food-giving, and the temple's main offering is prathal, a feast for devotees. Its great festival is Vaikathashtami in Vrischikam (Nov–Dec). The roads around the temple were the scene of the Vaikom Satyagraha of 1924–25, a landmark campaign against untouchability. Entry is for Hindus only.
