Shree Siddhivinayak Ganapati Mandir, Prabhadevi

S.K. Bole Marg, Prabhadevi, Mumbai · Lord Ganesha as Siddhivinayak, 'the wish-granting Vinayaka', with a right-turned trunk

Mumbai's most beloved Ganesha: a right-trunked black-stone idol from 1801, now inside a six-storey temple with a gold dome, where lakhs queue every Tuesday.

Siddhivinayak is the most visited Ganesha temple in Mumbai and one of the richest temple trusts in the city. The temple was first consecrated on Thursday 19 November 1801 as a small brick shrine around a black stone Ganesha whose trunk turns to the right, a form considered especially powerful and demanding of strict worship. Between 1990 and 1994 it was rebuilt as a six-storey stone temple with a gold-plated central dome. Film stars, politicians and ordinary Mumbaikars come before new ventures, exams and journeys, and Tuesdays and Sankashti Chaturthi draw the biggest crowds.

Best time to visit
