Shri Manguesh Temple (Shree Mangesh Saunsthan), Mangeshi

Mangeshi village, Priol, Ponda taluka, Goa · Lord Shiva as Manguesh (Mangirish), worshipped as a linga

Goa's most visited temple: a Shiva linga smuggled across the Zuari away from the Inquisition, now enshrined beneath white domes and a seven-storey lamp tower.

Shri Manguesh is the kuladevata (family deity) of many Goud Saraswat Brahmin families and one of the largest and most visited temples in Goa. The linga was first worshipped at Kushasthali (Cortalim) on the Zuari; when Portuguese rule and missionary pressure grew in the 16th century, devotees carried it secretly across the river to Priol, then outside Portuguese territory, around 1560. The present Maratha-era complex, with its domes, balustrades, temple tank and white seven-storey deepastambha (lamp tower), is a classic example of the Goan Hindu temple style.
