Thillai Nataraja Temple, Chidambaram

Chidambaram, Cuddalore district · Lord Shiva as Nataraja (Sabhanayakar), the cosmic dancer, worshipped as the Akasha (space) Lingam, with Goddess Sivakami (Sivakama Sundari); also Govindaraja Perumal (Vishnu)

The space element – where Shiva dances in a golden hall beside an empty space, the Chidambara Rahasyam.

Chidambaram is the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam for space or ether (akasha) and the foremost of all Shiva temples for Shaivites – in Tamil Shaiva usage it is simply 'Koyil', the Temple. Here Shiva is worshipped as Nataraja, the Lord of Dance, in a golden-roofed hall, the Chit Sabha. Beside him a curtain hides the Chidambara Rahasyam, an apparently empty space hung with golden bilva leaves that represents Shiva as formless space. The temple covers about 40 acres with nine gopurams; its towers are carved with the 108 karanas (dance poses) of the Natya Shastra.
