Five Himalayan Shiva shrines of the Pandavas
Five Shiva temples in the Garhwal Himalaya of Uttarakhand – Kedarnath, Tungnath, Rudranath, Madhyamaheshwar and Kalpeshwar – most reached only on foot.
After the Kurukshetra war the Pandavas sought Shiva's forgiveness. Shiva, unwilling to meet them, took the form of a bull and dived into the earth; parts of his body reappeared at five places: the hump at Kedarnath, the arms at Tungnath, the face at Rudranath, the navel at Madhyamaheshwar and the matted hair at Kalpeshwar.
The Pandavas are said to have built a temple at each place. Completing all five is a demanding trek pilgrimage, open only from about May to October–November (Kalpeshwar is open year-round).
