Maa Kamakhya Devalaya (Bordeuri Samaj)
Trust · Nilachal Hill, Guwahati, Assam
Kamakhya on Nilachal hill in Guwahati is among the most important Shakti Peethas and a centre of Tantric worship. The main temple stands within a complex of shrines to the Ten Mahavidyas and several Shiva temples. A temple Debutter Board ran it until 2015, when the Supreme Court restored management to the traditional Bordeuri Samaj. The Ambubachi Mela in June, when the temple closes for three days, draws very large crowds.
How it is run
The Bordeuri Samaj (adult male members of four Bordeuri families) runs the temple through elected Dolois. In July 2015 the Supreme Court transferred administration from the Kamakhya Debutter Board to the Bordeuri Samaj. The Devalaya's site lists an executive committee in office from November 2021.
