Shri Gangotri Mandir Samiti (Gangotri Temple Committee)

The Gangotri temple is not under BKTC. It is run by the temple committee of the Semwal priest families from Mukhba village, near Harsil. The committee announces the opening (Akshaya Tritiya) and closing (around Diwali) dates and leads the procession of the Ganga idol between Mukhba and Gangotri. In January 2026 it barred non-Hindus from the temple premises and the adjoining ghat.

How it is run

A committee of the hereditary Semwal priest families of Mukhba village; ETV Bharat named Dharmanand Semwal as President in March 2026.

Tips for pilgrims

Register on the Uttarakhand Char Dham portal (registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in) before travelling.
In winter the goddess is worshipped at Mukhba village near Harsil.
