Shri Badarinath-Kedarnath Temple Committee
Statutory board · Dehradun (office, approx.); temple offices at Badrinath, Kedarnath, Joshimath and Ukhimath
The committee was created under the 1939 Act to take over the administration of Badrinath from the Rawal, and later extended to Kedarnath and dozens of smaller shrines. It handles administration, offerings, puja bookings, accommodation and the winter shift of the deities to Joshimath (Badrinath) and Ukhimath (Kedarnath). Religious rituals stay with the traditional priests: the Nambudiri Rawal at Badrinath and the Veerashaiva Rawal's line at Kedarnath. A 2019 Char Dham Devasthanam Board briefly replaced the committee, but that law was withdrawn in November 2021 and BKTC was restored.
How it is run
A state-nominated committee (17 members under the 2002 amendment) with a Chairman and Vice-Chairman, and a Chief Executive Officer who carries out its orders; the official site listed Hemant Dwivedi as Chairman in October 2026.
Tips for pilgrims
- Char Dham pilgrims must register on the Uttarakhand portal registrationandtouristcare.uk.gov.in before travelling.
- Book Kedarnath helicopter tickets only through the IRCTC portal heliyatra.irctc.co.in; many fake booking sites exist.
- Both shrines close for winter (around October–November); worship then moves to Narsingh Temple, Joshimath (Badrinath) and Omkareshwar Temple, Ukhimath (Kedarnath).
- State emergency operations centre: 1070 (toll-free) or 0135-2710334.
